willpower

For me, MSN Messenger would be the difficult habit to quit, because I do it everyday and chat with my friends online. However if I really want to quit it, I believe that I will be able to quit, because even though I am addicted to it, I can quit doing it. To quit I will need the will power, which most people don't really have. The willpower is the most important value to quit a bad habit, because I believe that mind control is important. Therefore, if you can control your mind, then this means that you have the willpower.
In conclusion, through this project, I learned a lot of facts about how bad steroid is and the way to free yourself from what you are addicted to.

When was the last time I did something wrong even though I knew at the time that I was doing the wrong thing? Why did I do it?

I drank ice tea right after I came back from the dentist and the dentist told me to not eat anything before 30 minutes passed. However since I was very thirsty and I just decided to drink the ice tea which was in the fridge. Therefore I had to go to the dentist again and put the cream which prevents cavity again. This caused my mom to pay twice the amount of money as she was supposed to. By experiencing this situation, I learned that patience is important.
In conclusion, this is the reason why I understand how difficult it is to not try to avoid and stop the addiction.

How would your family be changed if a family member started abusing steroid or was addicted? How would your family deal with the individual.

Try to make the family member who is addicted excercise and not use steroid. In my prediction, my family will get disappointed to the family member who got addicted. However they will still help the family member who is addicted and try to free him/her from steroid. In order to do this, they will probably throw away all the steroid and the food for the member who got addicted will only be allowed to eat healthy food to not get ill. Moreover the family will confiscate money of the person who is addicted to prevent the addicted person from buying the steroids.

How will you help a person/friend/family member if he or she admitted a steroid problem to you and asked for your help.

you: maybe you should try and avoid the steroid
friend: i have been trying. but i cannot
you: then, throw away all your steroid
friend: ok, i will try that method
you: good, and also you will need to exercise at least 2 hours everyday to maintain your muscles ok?
friend: ok
you: also try to avoid junk food for now and eat a lot of foods made out of chicken breast such as grilled chicken breast
friend: but why chicken breast?
you: it's because chicken breast has high amount of protein and it is good for your health
friend: ok ~ thank you for your suggestion of how to stop the steroid addiction
you: you're welcome!!

a statement of how steroid affects families and communities, the economic costs to individuals, the community and law enforcement

"Steroid should be stopped and people who want burly and muscular body should be exercising. by using Steroids families and communities may be destroyed, because there will be more fights and arguments between people."

6. why do athletes use steroid?
7. write down one type of steroid
8. do middle and high schoolers use steroid these days?
9. what happens if a student was using steroid and get caught in school?
10. is steroid addictive?

Is the character physically or psychologically addicted to steroid? why?

All of them are both physically and psychologically addicted to Steroid, except the recreational drug user. The recreational steroid user isn't really addicted, because he just wants to have a good body shape with just a little amount of muscle. However he doesn't want to have a burly and a buffed up body like the other characters. The rest of the characters are addicted in both ways, because they are not satisfied with their body. This means that they are keeping on taking the steroids even though they took it, because they think that having huge muscles looks good. (which is not true!!)

ARTICLE: STEROID CULTURE

The Steroid Culture
By Gary DeMar

"World records are being smashed by men who have been taking anabolic hormones [steroids]. Some athletes see them as a new secret weapon. . . . It's the hottest--and quietest--argument in sports today." A 2004 editorial about Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, and breaking baseball's cherished records with the help of a little juice, right? Wrong! This opening paragraph appeared in the April 1967 issue of True magazine. That was 37 years ago. The sport wasn't baseball, it was track and field.

In April 1967, I had just turned 17. Ron Semkiw, who would go on to be a three-time Pennsylvania state champion (1970-72), national champion, and the junior college record holder in the shot put, was just 13. We lived on the same street and trained together. I taught him the basics of shot putting, throwing the discus, and weight lifting. My older brother had sent me the True magazine article with this written comment: "Gary, read this article. This is why [Randy] Matson and the rest are so good. They cheat a little. They take short cuts, and you're doing it the hard way. Good luck, and break your own record again."

Randy Matson was the world record holder in the shot put at the time (70' 7"). I was training hard to break the national high school record of 69' 6" (12 pounds) set by Karl Salb of Arkansas. The record was eventually broken by Sam Walker during my senior year. I got close, but not close enough. For a shot putter, I was small, being a fraction of an inch over 6 feet, and weighing about 200 pounds. My senior year, I weighed around 215 pounds. I lifted weights six days a week and ate enormous amounts of food. I can remember when I was 15 waking up one morning weighing 178 pounds and going to bed weighing more than 190 pounds. That’s the way it was done before steroids. Shot putting requires height, weight, and strength.

Sam Walker, first high school thrower to throw 70’

Ron Semkiw was a tad under six feet, but by his senior year he weighed around 230 pounds. His strength was legendary. He bench pressed 430 pounds as a high school senior. To anyone who knows anything about weight lifting, this is an extraordinary weight for anyone at any age. Most professional football players can't bench press 430 pounds. Ron did it while still in high school in a makeshift gym in his cramped basement. I spoke with Ron the other day. He is 50 years old, but not long ago squatted with 600 pounds.

We did all of this without steroids. Would I have taken steroids if the opportunity had presented itself? I really don't know. Looking back over what might have been, if I had taken steroids and had broken the record, it would not mean much to me today. It would have been like throwing a shot that was a few ounces light. Did the guys I competed against at the national high level take steroids? I don't think so. They were taller and bigger than I was. Times have changed. You need an edge.

What do we say to a pole vaulter like Bob Richards who never had access to a fiberglass pole, or the sprinter who didn’t have the advantage of a synthetic track, feather-light running shoes, or starting blocks? High jumpers flop instead of roll. They couldn’t flop when the pits were filled with sawdust. They had to land on their feet. The same was true of pole vaulters. These innovations have made track and field more interesting but less pure. High-level training facilities, never available to me when I was growing up, offer a decided advantage to modern athletes.

Given all the protestations by the sporting establishment, I don't know what the fuss is all about regarding steroids. The prevailing ethic today is that a person can do what he wants with his own body as long as what he does does not hurt anyone else. If a teenage girl can kill her preborn baby under the cover of constitutional law, then what's so immoral about athletes packing on the muscle by using steroids? At least the only person who might get hurt is the athlete taking the juice. We pass out needles to junkies and condoms to kids, so why not level the playing field and make steroids available to everyone who wants them.

If we are going to rid sports of steroids, something sport purists have been trying to do since the mid-1960s, it's going to take more than banning the stuff. Someone will always find a way to make steroid use undetectable. But at the heart of it all is a moral worldview that reaches no higher than the individual, "every man doing what is right in his own eyes" (Judges 17:6).

How are students caught abusing and selling STEROIDS and what are the consequences to this?

students are caught abusings steroids, because people can see that a body doesn't look like it is natural. After using steroids, people's body will become bulky and their voices will change.
Some students who sell steroids get caught because the rumors through students may reach to the teachers and the teachers may find out. Moreover, sometime teachers may find out because they see the students selling steroids in the breaks, during lunch time and lastly after school.

describe what you liked about this method of learning&the type of learner you are What positives and negatives does this provide vs the in class style

I didn't really enjoy learning and studying the drugs this way. This is because there were too much questions to answer and too little time. If I was given a choice between taking a test and doing this assignment, I would have chose to take a test. However the part that I enjoyed was the part when I got to make my own blog.
I am a visual learner, because I can understand more by looking at something. I find it easier to look at things and learn about them rather than listening to lectures. Well, I can listen to lectures, but if the lecture is long and boring, I might fall asleep.

a.short term effects
Reports indicate that use of anabolic steroids produces increases in lean muscle mass, strength, and ability to train longer and harder. Many health hazards of short-term effects are reversible. The major effects of anabolic steroid use include liver tumors, jaundice, fluid retention, and high blood pressure. Additional side effects include the following: for men shrinking of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts; for women growth of facial hair, changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle, deepened voice; for adolescents growth halted prematurely through premature skeletal maturation and accelerated puberty changes. Researchers report that users may suffer from paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability, delusions, and impaired judgment stemming from feelings of invincibility.

b. long term effects
Long-term, high-dose effects of steroid use are largely unknown.

Does the drug have a medical use? If so what is it?

Since the discovery and synthesis of testosterone in the 1930s, anabolic steroids have been used by physicians for many purposes, with varying degrees of success.

Bone marrow stimulation: For decades, anabolic steroids were the mainstay of therapy for hypoplastic anemias due to leukemia or kidney failure, especially aplastic anemia. Anabolic steroids have largely been replaced in this setting by synthetic protein hormones (such as epoetin alfa) that selectively stimulate growth of blood cell precursors.
Growth stimulation: Anabolic steroids can be used by pediatric endocrinologists to treat children with growth failure. However, the availability of synthetic growth hormone, which has fewer side effects, makes this a secondary treatment.
Stimulation of appetite and preservation and increase of muscle mass: Anabolic steroids have been given to people with chronic wasting conditions such as cancer and AIDS.
Induction of male puberty: Androgens are given to many boys distressed about extreme delay of puberty. Testosterone is now nearly the only androgen used for this purpose and has been shown to increase height, weight, and fat-free mass in boys with delayed puberty.
Testosterone enanthate has frequently been used as a male contraceptive and it is thought that in the near future it could be used as a safe, reliable, and reversible male contraceptive.
Anabolic steroids have been found in some studies to increase lean body mass and prevent bone loss in elderly men. However, a 2006 placebo-controlled trial of low-dose testosterone supplementation in elderly men with low levels of testosterone found no benefit on body composition, physical performance, insulin sensitivity, or quality of life.
Used in hormone replacement therapy for men with low levels of testosterone and is also effective in improving libido for elderly males.
Used to treat gender dysmorphia (the belief that one was born the wrong gender) by producing secondary male characteristics, such as a deeper voice, increased bone and muscle mass, facial hair, increased levels of red blood cells and clitoral enlargement in female-to-male patients.

history of STEROID

In order to trace the history and development of anabolic steroids from their beginning to their present day form, we first need to look back towards ancient times, when it was known that the testicles were required for both the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics. In modernity, this concept was further developed, by a scientist named Berthold and his experiments on cockerels done in 1849. He removed the testes from these birds, and they lost several of the characteristics common to the male of their species, including sexual function. So, we knew as early as 1849 that the testicles functioned to promote what we consider to be primary male sexual properties; in other words, they are what "make men into men". Berthold also found that if the testicles were removed and then transplanted to the abdomen, the sexual function of the birds was largely unaffected. When the birds were dissected, it was found that no nervous connections were formed, but a vastly extensive series of capillarization took place. This provided strong evidence that "the testes act upon the blood" and he further concluded that this blood then had a systemic effect on the entire organism. Anabolic Steroid history, therefore, can be truly said to have made its first step with this simple series of experiments.

Later, in 1929 a procedure to produce an extract of potent activity from bull's testicles was attempted, and in 1935 a more purified form of this extract was created. A year later, a scientist named Ruzicka synthesized this compound, testosterone, from cholesterol, as did two other scientists, Butenandt and Hanisch. Testosterone was, of course, the first anabolic steroid ever created, and remains the basis for all other derivations we have currently being used in medicine today. Testosterone was then used in 1936, in an experiment demonstrating that nitrogen excretion of the castrated dog could be increased by giving the dog supplemental testosterone, and this would increase its body weight. Shortly after this time, the Nazi´s were rumored to have given their soldiers anabolic steroids, but that rumor seems to be largely undocumented. Later, further experiments were carried out in men, of course showing that testosterone was a potent anabolic substance in humans. Later, between the years of 1948 and 1954, the pharmaceutical firms Searle and Ciba had experimented with the synthesizing of over a thousand different testosterone derivatives and similar analogues.

What drug are you researching? How is the drug taken? What are the street names of the drug?

Drug: STEROID

Anabolic steroids are drugs that resemble the chemical structure of the body's natural sex hormone testosterone, which is made naturally by the body. Testosterone directs the body to produce or enhance male characteristics such as increased muscle mass, facial hair growth, and deepening of the voice, and is an important part of male development during puberty.

When anabolic steroids increase the levels of testosterone in the blood, they stimulate muscle tissue in the body to grow larger and stronger. However, the effects of too much testosterone circulating in the body can be harmful over time.

What is an addiction? What does this mean? How do people become addicted?

When the word steroids is mentioned most people think only of anabolic steroids. Images of muscle bound body builders and media stories of athletes failing drug tests spring to mind. In fact steroids are hormones which occur naturally in the body and they've been used legally in medicine for decades.

http://www.guide4living.com/drugabuse/steroids.htm

Why do people abuse drugs?

abusing steroids is to improve their athletic performance. Among athletes, steroid abuse has been estimated to be less that 6 percent according to surveys, but anecdotal information suggests more widespread abuse. Although testing procedures are now in place to deter steroid abuse among professional and Olympic athletes, new designer drugs constantly become available that can escape detection and put athletes willing to cheat one step ahead of testing efforts. This dynamic, however, may be about to shift if the saving of urine and blood samples for retesting at a future date becomes the standard. The high probability of eventual detection of the newer designer steroids, once the technology becomes available, plus the fear of retroactive sanctions, should give athletes pause.

Another reason people give for taking steroids is to increase their muscle size or to reduce their body fat. This group includes people suffering from the behavioral syndrome called muscle dysmorphia, which causes them to have a distorted image of their bodies. Men with muscle dysmorphia think that they look small and weak, even if they are large and muscular. Similarly, women with this condition think that they look fat and flabby, even though they are actually lean and muscular.

Some people who abuse steroids to boost muscle size have experienced physical or sexual abuse. In one series of interviews with male weightlifters, 25 percent who abused steroids reported memories of childhood physical or sexual abuse. Similarly, female weightlifters who had been raped were found to be twice as likely to report use of anabolic steroids or another purported musclebuilding drug, compared with those who had not been raped. Moreover, almost all of those who had been raped reported that they markedly increased their bodybuilding activities after the attack. They believed that being bigger and stronger would discourage further attacks because men would find them either intimidating or unattractive.

What parts of the brain are affected by drugs? By your drug?

Some drugs work in the brain because they have a similar size and shape as natural neurotransmitters. In the brain in the right amount or dose, these drugs lock into receptors and start an unnatural chain reaction of electrical charges, causing neurons to release large amounts of their own neurotransmitter.
Some drugs lock onto the neuron and act like a pump, so the neuron releases more neurotransmitter. Other drugs block reabsorption or reuptake and cause unnatural floods of neurotransmitter.

[1]

All drugs of abuse, such as nicotine, cocaine, and marijuana, primarily affect the brain's limbic system. Scientists call this the "reward" system. Normally, the limbic system responds to pleasurable experiences by releasing the neurotransmitter dopamine, which creates feelings of pleasure.

http://teens.drugabuse.gov/facts/facts_brain1.asp

An undetermined percentage of steroid abusers become addicted to the drugs, as evidenced by their continuing to take steroids in spite of physical problems, negative effects on social relations, or nervousness and irritability. Also, they spend large amounts of time and money obtaining the drugs and experience withdrawal symptoms such as mood swings, fatigue, restlessness, loss of appetite, insomnia, reduced sex drive, and the desire to take more steroids. The most dangerous of the withdrawal symptoms is depression, because it sometimes leads to suicide attempts. Untreated, some depressive symptoms associated with anabolic steroid withdrawal have been known to persist for a year or more after the abuser stops taking the drugs.
